Hours after probationary sub-inspector Arshid Ahmad was shot dead by suspected militants in Khanyar, Srinagar, police announced they had identified his killers.

While the assailants’ or group’s identities were not revealed, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh informed the media that the culprits of the crime had been identified and would be brought to justice.

Police have established a squad to look into the death of Ahmad, who was put to rest late Sunday night in Kalmona village in Kupwara district. His funeral was attended by a huge number of people.

Ahmad was assigned to the police station at Khanyar. On social media, a CCTV video of an assailant brandishing a tiny weapon and firing at Ahmad from close range went viral. After returning from a hospital where he had taken an accused for a checkup, Ahmad, a native of Kupwara district, was shot at. Ahmad was taken to SKIMS in Soura, but he died from his injuries, according to authorities.

Multiple attacks on police officers have occurred in Kashmir in recent months, particularly in Srinagar.

On August 3, terrorists opened fire on a police Rakshak truck parked near Sheraz Chowk, injuring an officer and a civilian in the same location.

A police officer was murdered in a terrorist attack in south Kashmir’s Kulgam area, some 70 kilometres from Srinagar, on August 7.

Inspector Pervaiz Ahmad, a police officer of the Criminal Investigation Department, was murdered on June 22 at Nowgam, near his house on the outskirts of Srinagar, when terrorists opened fire on him. On June 17, an off-duty Jammu and Kashmir police officer was shot and killed near his home in the Saidapora neighbourhood of the Old City.
