New Delhi, April 2, 2026: The Ministry of Defence has awarded a ₹1,950 crore contract to Bharat Electronics Limited for the supply and installation of two indigenously developed mountain radars to the Indian Air Force, aimed at enhancing air surveillance along India’s northern borders.

BEL Weapon Locating Radar Mountain Version (WLR-M)

Designed by DRDO’s Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, these systems are optimised for high-altitude Himalayan conditions where conventional radars often lose effectiveness due to extreme weather and complex terrain.

BEL will manage full execution, including manufacturing, system integration, site infrastructure, and long-term support. The radars are scheduled for deployment within the next 36 months as part of broader air defence modernisation.

The systems incorporate advanced electronic scanning and frequency agility features that improve detection of stealthy targets and counter electronic warfare threats common in the region.

Once operational, they will integrate seamlessly with existing networks to provide commanders a clearer operational picture during both routine monitoring and crises.

This contract further advances India’s self-reliance in strategic defence technologies.
