The significance of January 15 dates back to 1949, when Field Marshal Kodandera "Kipper" Madappa Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander. This transition marked a crucial milestone in the army's journey, making it a truly independent national force.

The Legacy of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa

Field Marshal Cariappa, a highly respected military officer, was a trailblazer in the Indian Army. He was one of only two Indian Army officers to be awarded the five-star rank of Field Marshal, an honor he shares with Sam Manekshaw. 

Born on January 28, 1898, Cariappa had an illustrious career, serving on the front lines in both World War II and the 1947 Indo-Pak war. 

He was renowned for his leadership and bravery, once famously stating, "I am an Indian and to the last breath would remain an Indian."

How Army Day is Celebrated

 Army Day is marked by a grand parade at the Cariappa Parade Ground in New Delhi. The Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Mukund Naravane, presides over the event, taking the salute and addressing the nation. 

The parade is a spectacular display of military prowess, featuring impressive stunts and demonstrations of strength by army personnel. It's also an occasion for the army to recognize its heroes, with gallantry awards and Sena medals presented to deserving soldiers and officers for their exceptional service.
