NEW DELHI: In a significant boost for the indigenous defence industry, India goes to make six new Airborne Early Warning and Control planes to be developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on aircraft from Air India to additional enhance Air Power’s surveillance capabilities alongside borders with China and Pakistan.

Authorities sources mentioned that as per the discussions on the AEW&C Block 2 plane to be developed by the DRDO under a Rs 10,500 crore mission, the six aircraft can be acquired from the Air India fleet and modified to fly with a radar that can give 360-degree surveillance functionality to the defence forces.

“The six AEW&C block two planes can be extremely successful than their predecessor NETRA aeroplane and supply 360-degree protection deep contained in the enemy territory throughout missions. The federal government is anticipated to clear the mission quickly,” authorities sources instructed ANI.

The mission to construct the AEW&C system on present plane from the Air India fleet might also imply that India could not purchase the six Airbus 330 transport aircraft planned to be acquired earlier from the European agency, the sources stated.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation had earlier deliberate to construct six Airborne Warning and Management System (AWACS) on the Airbus 330 plane for which some amenities have been deliberate to be created in Bengaluru.

As per plans, the six new plane can be despatched to a European destination to the unique gear manufacturer for modification of the planes for putting in the radar, the sources said.

Sources mentioned the mission has been deliberate in a strategy to promote Make in India in protection and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Block-I of the mission was delayed past the scheduled timelines however with the prior expertise beneath its belt, the Centre for Airborne Research lab of DRDO is planning to finish it in a shorter timeframe.

The IAF has three PHALCON AWACS programs purchased by it from Israel and Russia beneath which the radar is supplied by the Israelis whereas the platform used is the Russian Ilyushin-76 transport plane.

The 2 NETRA plane supplied by the DRDO have additionally carried out very effectively within the latest conflicts the place they’ve flown extensively to regulate the enemy exercise.
