Washington, D.C. – Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has sparked controversy after a video surfaced showing him suggesting that a military coup, similar to the one that recently occurred in Myanmar, "should happen" in the United States.

Flynn made the comments on Sunday at a conference titled "For God & Country Patriot Roundup" in Dallas, Texas. The event was reportedly attended by numerous supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

A member of the audience asked Flynn, "I want to know why what happened in Myanmar can't happen here?" to which he replied, "No reason, I mean, it should happen here. No reason. That's right."

For months, online forums popular with QAnon and Donald Trump supporters have celebrated the military takeover in Myanmar, which overthrew a democratically elected government. These groups have suggested a similar event should take place in the U.S. to reinstate Trump as president.

Since the military coup on February 1, Myanmar has faced widespread protests and deadly violence. The Assistance Association of Political Prisoners (AAPP) reports that the military has killed at least 840 people, including three on Sunday, as part of its violent crackdown on anti-coup protesters.

During the same Dallas event, Flynn also repeated the false claim that Trump "won" both the popular and Electoral College votes in the 2020 election. Some QAnon followers have long held the belief that the U.S. military will intervene to return Trump to the presidency.
