India observed Kargil Vijay Diwas on Monday, July 26, honoring the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War. During this conflict, the Indian armed forces successfully repelled Pakistan’s attempts to seize strategic heights in the Kargil sector in Operation Vijay.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “We remember their sacrifices. We remember their valour. Today, on Kargil Vijay Diwas, we pay homage to all those who lost their lives in Kargil protecting our nation. Their bravery motivates us every single day.” He also shared an excerpt from last year’s Mann Ki Baat radio program.

President Ram Nath Kovind, along with CDS General Bipin Rawat, planned to visit Drass to pay tribute at the Kargil War Memorial near Tololing. However, due to severe weather conditions, the President could not make the trip. General Rawat visited Kargil earlier to review security arrangements.
The President is expected to lay a wreath at the Baramulla War Memorial in Kashmir soon, according to Army officials.
The opposition Congress party also paid tribute via Twitter, stating, “Heartfelt tributes to every soldier who laid down his life for the dignity of our tricolour. Our accolade for the saints who protect us and inspire the nation.”
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Ardent recognitions for each officer who set out his life for the pride of our tricolour. We will always remember your and your families’ incomparable sacrifice for the country’s security. Jai Hind.”
